On my last night in Mexico City, I got an invitation to come to an open air worship time called Altar, from my friend Jose. It was starting at 8:30pm in downtown Coyoacán. Coyoacán is well know as the place where Mexico's conqueror Cortes spent his later days, Frida Kahlo painted in her Casa Azul and where many tourists come to view the famous Coyote fountain. It's also a place were we had done open air evangelism back in Nov 1993 with YWAM.
I had to be up early and at the airport 6am the next morning but I really didn't want to miss out on this. So we headed downtown in the evening.
To my amazement, when we arrived at the town square, there was about 500 people worshiping and praising God with complete abandonment. It was incredible to witness and participate in. One hour became two and there seemed to be no sign of slowing down. The sound overpowered all the other sounds around that evening, which is no small feat in Mexico. Incredible as well, was that this was many churches coming together rather than just one with no other agenda other than worship Jesus in unity.
As we sang, I couldn't help myself from just looking around the whole crowd and soaking it all in. I was convinced that I was witnessing a new thing that God is doing in that city. He is raising up a new movement of worship and unity and the hunger for this is overwhelming.
As I stood in the crowd and considered what God has called us to do in Mexico City, a day of prayer, fasting, worship and unity on Day of the Dead, it filled my heart with fresh confidence. Confidence because God is already stirring something special in Mexico City and beyond. Confidence because I've never seen so many people in public worshiping Jesus. And confidence because all we are doing, in its most distilled sense, is hearing this God sound that others are also hearing and riding the wave of what God is already doing.
